Ferdinando Cefalù (Marcello Mastroianni)
So what do you do if you just can’t stand your wife any longer and there is this really hot 16-year old girl that you want to be with. Since you’re in early 1960’s Italy you can’t divorce your wife because it’s illegal. However, you’re not in just any part of Italy. You’re in Sicily! It’s simply then, get her to cheat on you or in someway dishonor you. Then you are well without your rights to kill her and get a minimal sentence of about 3-7 years. Problem is that she adores you. In fact, it’s because she constantly asks how much you love her and all that smothering love stuff that makes you want to get rid of her in the first place.

The Wife As We Would Like Her To Be
The Girl We Would Like
So how are we going to get this type of woman to cheat. Our hero played by Marcello Mastroianni thinks long and hard about it. He buys her a sexy dress and parades her around to see who responds, but no luck. Instead, he finds an old flame of her’s and is able to find a way to employ him in his home restoring old ceiling paintings. He then sets up surveillance equipment, locks himself away in a room, and starts observing. He finally gets them to run away together which isn’t as convenient as catching them in the act, but it’s workable.
I won’t give the rest of the film except to say that this is an Italian Comedy with a great twist at the end. I highly recommend it.
