In The Realm Of The Senses is about a man and a woman who become increasingly obsessed with each other. The movie is essentially one long sex scene that becomes progressively more risky and ultimately fatal. The film ends with the death of the man due to strangulation. The woman then proceeds to cut off his penis and balls. She carries them around with her in her purse until she is captured by police. The story is based on a true story from 1930’s Tokyo.
The film is a bare bones story of sexual obsession, nothing more. What makes it great is how well it captures this obsession. Some films are great because how much they do, but few films are successful at keeping the film’s scope small. By focusing the entire film on just one thing the film is able to completely explore it. This is a well made film, but don’t expect this Japanese erotica to arouse you. If you want that, check out The Watcher In The Attic (1976).
