This film follows a girl named Ling Yang who goes to Shanghai and enrolls in a sports oriented college. She becomes the Running Queen and goes through the motions of what you would expect from a movie with that setup. She mingles with the upper class, plays around with boys, becomes a target for her fellow runners, and ultimately rediscovers the true meaning of sports.

This is another film meant to unify the Chinese in their struggle to fight the Japanese. It’s not as Soviet as The Big Road, but it gets the point across. It’s by the same director though and I noticed that in both films how well you eat marks difference in who you are. In both films director Yu Sun juxtaposes two dinner tables through a fade transition that instantly tells us what kind of people we are seeing.

It’s not great, but it’s an enjoyable sports movie of the 1930’s so it’s worth a look.
