Osaka Elegy follows a woman’s fall from receptionist to exile. She ends up a mistress in order to get her father the money he needs to keep him from getting arrested. He then ends up with another man in order to get the money to see her brother graduate and get a good job. By the end, she is far from the innocent girl above and when she tries to go home to the family she has helped, they reject her and send her onto the streets.

It’s pretty standard Mizoguchi territory except in it’s visual style. It’s very similar to Josef Von Sternberg in the way it uses expressionist lighting and composition in depth. Seems a bit like a visual experimentation for Mizoguchi.

I recommended it.
