I saw this in theaters when it came out and enjoyed laughing at the jokes made at my generation’s expense. But over the years the jokes have faded away and now that Paul Rudd gets regular work, it’s the character of Christian that keeps this film in my mind. At a time when I was in middle school and threw around the word faggot, Christian was one of the first reasonably positive portrayals of homosexuals I ever saw. Particularly one that doesn’t automatically equate homosexuality with crossdressing. A gay version of Beverly Hills, 90210’s Jason Priestly basically. He’s no Captain Jack from Torchwood, but Kurt from Glee and Marco from Degrassi are built on characters like Christian. A positive view of homosexuality began here for me.
I will probably rank the films when I reach 100.
