What do you get when you put Peter Sellers made up as an Indian (from India) with a bunch of stuff shirts at a party? Mayhem, throw in a drunk waiter and Blake Edwards and you get comedic brilliance. I don’t want to say too much about this film, but basically Sellers screws up a movie shoot and then gets accidentally invited to a party being held by the producer. The producer of course doesn’t know who he is since an Indian actor would be a petty servant to a man like that. Once at the party, Sellers and a waiter who gets progressively drunk basically improvise for the entire movie.
One of my favorites scenes comes at the beginning when a woman walks up to Sellers and asks if he wants a drink. He looks at her martini glass and says there’s nothing in it. She says there is, but he insists there isn’t. We can see there isn’t, but she says, “Well, I see something in it and I don’t like it!”
Even an elephant shows up the party. The only thing I would recommend in lieu or in preparation for this film is one of Jacques Tati’s Mr. Hulot comedies. See this movie.
