Lula (Laura Dern) and Sailor (Nicolas Cage)
The film begins with a stupid son of a bitch trying to kill the wrong Nicolas Cage character, a man named Sailor. Sailor is a stoned Elivs/James Dean type who promptly beats the man to death. The man was sent by the mother of his girlfriend Lula (Laura Dern), so when Sailor gets out on probation and the lovers hit the road and the mother (Diane Ladd) gets involved with some dangerous types to hunt them down. What follows is a bizarre road trip with sex, rock, classic Lynch weirdness, and references to The Wizard Of Oz.
Diane Ladd and Harry Dean Stanton
The Red Shoes (There’s No Place Like Home)
The Wicked Witch
The Good Witch
If on the one end you have the great Blue Velvet and on the other the mess Lost Highway, this film is in the middle. It doesn’t make sense while being weird, but it doesn’t sap all the fun out of the surreal trip. I wish I could say more, but I had no idea what the film was about, just that I enjoyed it. Definitely a guilty pleasure, I recommend it.
