This is naturalism at it’s best. Made by Ermanno Olmi in Lombardy with actual non-professional residents, the film is about actual Lombardians only 80 years earlier. What can I say the film is realism for realism’s sake, but it works. There is no real narrative, the film takes place over the course of a year and we watch their lives. Things happen, but were never on rails, nor is the film only about any one of those things. Also the film has enough variety in the activities of the Lombardians that we never get bored. Finally, there a lovable bunch that are easy to grow to close to and care about. There isn’t anything more to say because there isn’t anything more to the film. It’s simple, beautiful, and naturalism at its best.
