Could You Love That Mug?
The film begins with an introduction telling us not to expect any moral to the story nor heroes or villains, only plain people like ourselves. Then the characters of HE, SHE, and THE OTHER GUY are introduced. The story follows the man (HE) pictured above who is married and takes a woman as his mistress (SHE). However, she is already seeing another guy (THE OTHER GUY) who takes the money she obtains and spends it himself. Prime material for a film noir and it was turned into one in the US called Scarlet Street. This film doesn’t have that noir quality at all. It’s a small scale human tragedy.
SHE and HE
SHE and THE OTHER GUY
Aside from a neat little dance sequence where the other guy presses the mistress to get more from her sugar daddy, the film is noteworthy because the characters feel real. The most important part being that there is no ridiculous Crime And Punishment style wrestling of consciences. Renoir took this story and created people instead of people guided by a moral code and that makes it worth a look.
