I have been so worn out this week that while I can get through a lot of films when you can do nothing but sit, but writing about them is a different matter. What I can say is the Fat City parallels the stories of two boxers, one young and one old, who are trying to make it big. Neither is really successful and the end with an uncomfortable acknowledgment of this fact. It’s a John Huston film so it is a cut above the usual stuff, but this movie isn’t that great. It’s just kind of depressing, like my days of this week.
I know this is John Huston’s last film and that he was on his last legs while making it, but that doesn’t make this film any good. It just doesn’t pass the entertainment test. The film is only 83 minutes, but it is very boring. The first 70 minutes or so are Irish naturalism with nothing of redeeming value. When we finally get to the last 10 minutes or so of the film we do get something of meaning, but it doesn’t make up for the first 70 minutes of the film. I really can’t recommend this film.
