First off, this is an experimental film. It’s a visual analysis of a film from 1905 of the same title. I’m sure there is a lot about this film that I missed, but for me it didn’t really work. Director Ken Jacobs did the right thing. He opened with the short and closed with it. In between he analyzed the frames heavily in closeup, medium, and long shots and that make you feel like you’re in a movie theater.
I did come to appreciate all the detail that goes in to making a movie, even one as simple as a 1905 short. I just would have liked to have a audible guide, instead of leaving me in silence for the entire film. I say, approach with caution.
