The title of this movie tells you exactly what it’s all about. We follow a little kid on the streets for about an hour. He is hungry and nothing goes his way. He is taken in at one point by some rich people, but that doesn’t work out either. The film is like a Chinese attempt at Italian neorealism, but without as much emotional impact. That’s not to say that we don’t feel for the kid because we do. The film ends with what was supposed to be hope in the form of the Communists. After the sad ending, we see the kid in a crowd cheering their arrival. It’s worth a look.
