Never underestimate the influence of the American Western. Still, I never would have thought that I would see such a hilarious parody of the Western from Czechoslovakia. The film takes place in Stetson City, Arizona 1885 where we find the Trigger Whiskey Saloon run by Doug Badman. He has a Marlene type dancer/singer named Tornado Lou and a host of unsavory characters. In comes Winnifred Goodman (note the last name) and her father pushing temperance.
It isn’t long before the locals decide to have some fun with Winnifred and her family. But lucky for them Lemonade Joe is here. He comes to fight for good against evil, but also to push Kolaloka Lemonade over Trigger Whiskey in the process. The lemonade is like his life blood and spirits are like his kryptonite. Soon a nemesis for Joe shows up and the battle over whether Trigger Whiskey or Kolaloka Lemonade will be the drink of choice in Stetson City ensues. It gets pretty zany with slow motion, sped up frame rates, wonderful use of tints, songs, clever camerawork, Western cliches and archetypes, etc. The ending is Marx Brothers insane. Here are some example screenshots.
I haven’t laughed this hard in a while. I highly recommend it.
An aside: The woman who played Winnifred Goodman is named Olga Schoberová. Apparently she became so popular that she wound up on the cover of Playboy.
