This is one of my Dad’s favorite movies. I have seen bits and pieces over the years, but I never sat down and watched the whole thing until tonight. The movie isn’t anything fancy, it’s just fun.
The movie starts off in Bermuda with two divers played by Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset on a romantic holiday. They find a wreck with a medallion that appears to be Spanish. They also find a small glass container with some liquid in it. It turns out that the liquid is morphine and there are many more ampules still in the ship. That puts a Haitian drug dealer played by Louis Gossett Jr. on their trail and they soon ally themselves with a treasure hunter played by Robert Shaw.
The morphine comes from a ship called the Goliath, which was also carrying a lot of ammunition. But where did this Spanish medallion come from when the Spanish fleet that sank had sunk off the coast of Florida? The film becomes a rush to destroy the morphine and find the treasure.
In addition to beautiful shots of Jacqueline Bissett in her wet T-shirt (had to mention it eventually), there is a lot of beautiful underwater photography including a very large moray eel that is guaranteed to give you a jolt. This film is one of those that is a no-brainer. You just sit back and enjoy.
