This is my third Pietro Germi film and it’s the craziest of the three. In Divorce, Italian Style murdering your wife was the way to get a divorce in Italy where divorce was illegal. In Seduced And Abandoned maintaining family honor was of paramount importance even if it meant marrying off the daughter to the man who violated her in the first place. In this film we follow a group of philandering husbands and wives and the society that allows for and manages their actions. It’s broken up into three parts.
In the first part we meet Gasparini who goes to his doctor very embarrassed that he it impotent. The doctor thinks it’s hilarious and takes him to a party with their friends. When his wife needs to be taken home and he wants to stay, he sends Gasparini home with her. In short order he finds out that Gaparini is still fully functional. Oops! That’s ok, as long as it’s kept a secret.
In the second part we meet Osvaldo Bisigato and his wife from hell Gilda. Osvaldo has been thinking about seeing a girl named Milena who works at a coffeehouse/bar. The problem is that he doesn’t want a mistress, which would be perfectly Italian, he wants to leave his wife for her. Oops! Don’t worry, society conspires against him to get the girl out of the picture and force him back into his marriage.
In the third part a beautiful young girl goes around town and sleeps with several of the husbands. It turns out she’s underage. Oops! Don’t worry, one of the wives sleeps with and pays 5 million to the father of the girl to retract their statement.
They don’t make them like this in America. It’s hilarious and I highly recommend it.
