A bride. A groom. A wedding. The groom runs into a couple with his carriage and the horse eats a part of the woman’s hat. The man threatens to destroy all of the grooms property unless he replaces the exact hat. Hence the hilarity begins.
It’s not quite screwball as some might tell you, but it sure has a lot of it’s elements. The major drawbacks of the film are it’s length and the fact that it’s silent. It drags after a while and we have to hear the insanity (it’s noticeably missing).
Nevertheless, I recommend it.
This movie is fun. Not great, but fun. If you’ve never seen a Rene Clair film then this is a good start. The movie is about a guy who has about 5 people breathing down his neck because of the money he owes them. The guy is lucky though because he soon finds out that he has won the Dutch lottery. However, his luck has a little trouble catching up to him because the lottery ticket winds up in a coat and the coat is missing. As you can gather by now, the film is about chasing down this coat. What makes this movie really fun is how Rene Clair uses music to turn ever scene into a miniature circus. Sometimes it’s the lyrics, sometimes the choreography. It’s a lot of fun. This film is worth your time.
